Bread ingredient

Adding seaweed to bread provides a boost of minerals, vitamins, and a salty umami flavour.

If you make bread yourself, just add a couple of tablespoons of seaweed flakes in with the flour and stir.

Or if you've never tried it before, have a go at this easy soda bread recipe:

Ingredients:

3 cups of flour (try mixing up wholemeal/plain/strong/whatever you've got)

1 tsp bicarbonate of soda

1 tsp salt

1 cup plain yogurt (or sour milk, which you can make by adding lemon to milk and leaving for 20minutes)

2 tbsp butter, melted

2 tbsp dried seaweed flakes (or you can use fresh finely chopped stuff)

Instructions:

Preheat your oven to 220°C.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flours, bicarb, and salt. Mix in the seaweed flakes.

Stir in the yogurt and melted butter until the dough comes together.

Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead it gently for a few minutes until it forms a smooth ball.

Place the dough on a baking sheet lined tray and use a sharp knife to cut an "X" into the top.

Bake the bread in the preheated oven for 35 minutes, or until it is golden brown on the outside and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom. Allow the bread to cool for a few minutes before serving with butter.
